"Journey To Newland ™ " The books - It's official - We're published

The Journey to Newland Facilitator's Guide
by Bill Poole, Greg Gray and Karen Gray
Published by Pfeiffer in November 2007

Journey to Newland began with a story written by Bill Poole, of a group of animals who took the desperate step of leaving the comfort of Oldland for the opportunities and unknown pitfalls of Newland. The story is a brilliant analogy of the challenges faced by anyone who goes through a change process. Greg and Karen Gray met Bill Poole at the ASTD conference in America , and teamed up to write the facilitator's guide which teaches an innovative and successful change leadership process.

The powerful Gray Training instructional design methodology is evident in this material. The full pack contains:

•  A step-by-step facilitator's manual
•  An engaging participant's workbook
•  A pre-journey guide
•  Journey to Newland – the story and the DVD
•  Visual aids DVD

Greg and Karen Gray are available to facilitate the Journey to Newland workshops for you, or you can purchase the Journey to Newland Facilitator's Guide and run your own programmes in-house.

ASTD South Africa 2008: 4th Global Conference and Exhibition

Karen and Greg Gray are both presenting pre-conference at the ASTD conference in Sun City on Monday 11 February 2008 .

Demystifying the Unit Standard: Greg Gray

Master the analysis of unit standards and develop relevant outcomes-based training material and valid assessments. Unit standards ensure training standards but the way they are written often intrudes and makes them difficult to unpack. This practical workshop session will give you the techniques to unpack any unit standard and guarantee that you always have relevant training material and valid assessment instruments.

Putting Learning on Fast-forward: An Experiential Learning Design Workshop: Karen Gray

Experiential learning is a powerful training design in which learners are challenged to solve problems, research issues or figure out ways to accomplish a task by making the right mistakes to help them to learn effectively. For experiential learning to be successful, you need a rigorous design, sensitive facilitation skills, and the ability to let your learners stay in question long enough for learning to take place. All of these practical skills are covered on this workshop.

20th Birthday Year

Gray Training was born in June 1987 – and this year celebrates 20 years of contributing to the development of South Africa 's training talent. The big event of the year was our birthday conference in September. Entitled Best Practices for Adult Learning Conference , the conference was aimed at sharing workable ideas about Adult Learning with members of the training fraternity.

Greg Gray , founder member of Gray Training, took a controversial view of assessment in his presentation: Assessment - Are we really assessing what SAQA and Unit Standards demand we should?

He challenged the audience to ask themselves two critical questions:
•  How do we know when we've assessed everything that needs to be assessed?
•  When can we be certain we've assessed enough?

Greg's incisive presentation showed how unit standards could drive the design of formative and summative assessment instruments, and how to build rigorous – but fun assessment tools!

Dr Lucy Voss-Price, a past student of Gray Training and now Academic Manager of Regenesys spoke on Change is fraught, not taught: Using analogy and metaphor to facilitate Change Management. She shared with us a case study of how change management and image theatre came together in a West Coast College management team facilitation. As part of the case study she facilitated an image theatre experience with us, helping us to experience this special methodology for ourselves.

Cecil Murray, Deputy Director of the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Development, Wits, presented an entertaining and slightly off-the-wall investigation of brain-based learning. Learning with the brain in mind – adults and their learning styles investigated the practical application of the Ned Herrmann brain based learning styles model. There was something in this presentation for everyone – for trainers, developers, and students – and he succeeded in getting us off our feet to try out some of the whole brain exercises.

Karen Gray, founder member of Gray Training, ended off the day with a practical workshop entitled Debunking the myths about adult learning - creating memorable learning events. The presentation began with some fascinating new information about retention and review of learning. It continued with a workshop which surfaced dozens of practical ideas for creating theme-based materials for memorable learning .
